Today we bid farewell to John Mellon, Managing Director who retired after 25 years service at Nitronica.
John joined the business in 1997 as a Financial Controller. After graduating from Queens university with a degree in Russian he decided to undertake a postgrad degree in Accountancy and qualified in 1989. He joined the organisation just as Reltec bought the business from GPT. During John’s subsequent years he seen both Marconi and Viasystems owning the Ballynahinch site. Following the telecoms crash in the early 2000’s when the business lost about 80% of its business, John and the rest of the management team decided to carry out a management buyout. During this process the Managing Director at the time moved to another company and John was appointed as Managing Director. In December 2002 John Mellon, Neil Harvey, Seamus Mooney and John Hutchinson completed the management buyout. They began with 3 customers in 2 different sectors and knew a lot of hard work had to be done to expand the business into more sectors and increase their customer base. With hard work and determination, they were able to grow the business and by 2019 they had over 50 customers in 15 different sectors. At this point they decided to sell the business and it was bought by The Pexion Group in May 2019. At this point John was appointed as Managing Director of the Pexion EFAB Division comprising of 7 businesses including Nitronica. John has steered the business through many challenging times and with his hard work has been able to grow the business into the success it is today.
“When I joined the business 25 years ago I honestly didn’t envisage I would be staying for so long. However, the business and more importantly the people I’ve had the pleasure of working with have made the years fly by. Together we’ve overcome several major recessions and even a global pandemic and all the while building the business up from an in-house manufacturing facility to a company serving customers all around the world. It’s been quite a ride!! I’d just like to thank all my colleagues – present and past – for all the help, support, friendship and craic that they’ve given me over the years. Just a special word of thanks to Neil, Seamus and John for being the best partners I could have wished for and to Dave, Darren, Tony and the whole team at Pexion for their unstinting help and support over the last few years. Time marches on however and it’s time to hand over to the next generation. I look forward to watching from afar how the business grows and prospers over the coming years under Chris’s expert guidance and wish them every success for the future.”
